MEVLANA MOHAMED DJELAL-AD-DIN RUMI Birth:September 30th 1207 – Death: December 17th 1273
Mevlana’s real name is Mohamed Djelal-ad-din. Names of “Mevlana” and “Rumi” had been given later. He borned in Balkh, it was a big, ancient city and the center of Turkish culture, today it is in Afghanistan. He was coming from an aristocrat family, his mother was Mumine Hatun, she was daughter of Emir (Governor) of Balkh Rukn-ad-din; his father was Sultan-al Ulema (Sultan of the scholers ) Mohamed Baha-ad-din Veled, he was a great scholer beyond compare in all sciences, he was like an unlimited ocean and if we want to know Mevlana, we have to know Mevlana, we have to know his father too. He is bond with fidelity to Koran and the last prophet Mohamed and he says:”I have never seen a beter way than Mohamed’s way and a beter conduct than his.” Mevlana and his family had left Balkh in 1213 because of the invasion of Mongols and indifference of Kharzemshah administration to religious orders. At first they went to Baghdad and then they went to pilgrimage to Mecca by the way of Kufe, later they went to Damascus, Mevlana and his family went to Malatya, Erzincan and than Karaman, the latest stop was Konya. Mevlana had been noticed and praised by the scholars of his time even when he was just a child and Ferid-ad-din Attar (an important scholar) had said that :”An ocean is following a sea.” When he had seen that Mevlana was walking behind his father, so he noticed his worth when he was a little child. When Mevlana settled in Karaman, he married to Gevher Banu and his sons Sultan Veled and Ala-ad-din Chelebi borned. After the death of Gevher Banu, he married to Kira Hatun and his son Muzaffer-ad-din Emir Alim Chelebi and his daughter Melike Hatun borned. Konya was the capital city of Anatolian Seljuklu State and a very bright time was lived then when Ala-ad-din Keykubad was the sultan of the state. There are six important persons in Mevlana’s life¸his father Sultan-al-ulema Baha-ad-din Veled, Seyyid Burhan-ad-din Muhakkık-ı Tirmizi, Shems-i Tebrizi, Salah-ad-din Zerkub-i Konevi, Chelebi Husam-ad –din and Mevlana’s son Sultan Veled. His father was also his first master. Seyyid Burhan-ad-din was a intermediary of Mevlana’s rising, Shems-i Tebrizi caused to fly Mevlana to the eternity Salah-ad-din and Husam-ad-din had become a means as a mirror to his maturity and his confidants. And his son Sultan Veled understood and explained Mevlana in the best way. All of them had gathered in Mevlana some with his refinement, some with his crazy mystical contemplation, some with his harmony, some with his tranquillity; all of them had found the spring of divine favour at him. And sultan Veled became a lake at the front of that enthusiastic spring; he kept and put in order that magnificient culture in himself, he continued Mevlana’s belief and thoughts in case of a dervish convent. Shems-i Tebrizi was very very important in Mevlana’ life, he was a scream, an amazement and a lightning flesh from the beyond of this world. And Mevlana was a fall of inspiration that reflected it for thousand of times and leads it to the ocean of thought and poetry. Mevlana’s works are, Mesnevi, Divan-ı Kebir, Fihimafih, Mecalis-i Seb’a. Mesnevi is in six valumes, 26.000 verses, Divan-ı kebir is in seven valumes, 40.000 verses. Heart is very very important for Mevlana, he says:”There is a way from heart to heart.” It is not important to make weak the egoism but it is important to overcome and to surpass the egoism; for reaching to that aim he had approved and used the poetry, music and sema, he propagated and kept this thought alive. The unique reality is Allah (God) and God is unlimited, eternal, perfect and immortal. God was a secret treasure and he had created the universe as a mirror to Himself by an order of “Be!” (Kun). Mevlana had loved the all creatures, the all people because of the Creator and advised to surpass the egoism and to become union, to say “we”. If we say “we”, we became an ocean. He determinated the principle of being a real humanbeing by saying “Seem as you are or be as you seem.” In this endless tolerance, there are the secret of the monotheism, the divine light of Koran, the consciousness of faith and the peace and tranquillity of morals of Prophet Mohamed. He always looked at the light. “Do not go towards the desperation neighbourhood, there are many hopes.\ Do not gotowards the darkness, there is sun.” Mevlana is an appreciated friend who becomes union with people, a compassionate father, a delicate spirited person. Mevlana had called people, all nations to his door of love and tolerance. He had become a symbol of love and peace and said:”I didnot come to devide, I came for unity.” Humanbeingis the most honoured personality of the universe, he condescends because of the endless love of humanbeing. Mevlana has died in December 17th 1273, it was a little before sunset. While he was saying“Donot look for my grave on earth, my grave is in the hearts of lovers.”; he was in the happiness of reaching to God. Dervishes called the night which Mevlana reached to God as “Sheb-i Arus” (The wedding night). I know that it is impossible to explain Mevlana or even his shadow with a few words; trying to explain him is like tryingto narrate the ocean by a bucket of water. There is “Mevlana” who is followed by millions of people all over the world and for all times because of his life style, his morals, his mood and divinejoy, his love, his sema, his holy personality. Somany intellectual poets in Europe admire him with a few verses in amazement.
